Report on 2015 May Fayre

from the Evington Echo, June/July 2015

Barry ReevesThe Beltane Spring Fayre Group in association with Friends of Evington held their annual May Fayre and Maypole dancing event at Evington Park House and grounds on Saturday 9th May. The Fayre was held at Evington Park for the second consecutive year.

The Pagan celebration was hosted for the first time in 2005 at Castle Gardens, Leicester and celebrated its tenth anniversary on Saturday.

The schedule for the day was made up of talks, poetry readings and dancing. Acapella singers ‘Young No More’ treated the audience to traditional English songs and the Tangent Poets and Pagan Poets, who are based at the Curve Theatre in Leicester, conducted some open mic poetry readings during the event.

Maypole dancingThe Oak Room at Evington House provided a traditional setting for folk song and guitar music delivered by Barry Reeves, renowned for his haunting music and beautiful melodies

Friends of Evington provided refreshments and a cooked meal. Sponsorship for the lunch came from the Village Fish Bar at 28 Main Street in Evington. The day was filled with an array of talks, workshops, readings and song.

Maypole dancing was held with Geoff of the English Folk and Dance society outside Evington House where spectators watched the celebration.

There were a variety of stalls at the event, providing information and the opportunity to purchase some wonderfully crafted flowers from recycled materials.

Lesley Vann, who organised the event with Friends of Evington was pleased at how Evington Park was allowing the traditional community event to continue and maintain public interest.

Lesley previously served on the City Mayor’s Faith Forum and now works with Inter-Faith to Old Nic of Young No Morepromote out reach programs and events such as the Spring Fayre.

Previously, funding had come from the Home Office and Museum Services, but this had stopped since 2007 leaving Lesley and others she works with to raise awareness in other ways.

A closing ceremony marked the end of an eventful day fuelled with celebration of nature and spirituality. Featured in the photographs are Barry Reeves playing guitar, 'Old Nick' of Young No More and Maypole dancers.
